According to the World Population Data Sheet 0.1 percent of the population living with HIV/AIDS in 2009 between the ages of 15-49 are males, and 1.1 percent are women. The United Nations are aware of this growing problem and have come up with plans to help combat the battle against HIV/AIDS. According to the UNICEF website the United Nation are placing an emphasis on the prevention of virus transmission from mother to children. Since early 2000, the National Vertical Transmission of HIV/AIDS Reduction Programme (PNRTV), set up as a pilot project at three maternity hospitals in the country that has been moving towards achieving its purpose. Although it is still a distant goal, it`s getting closer by the day: “Contributing to reduce the social and health impact of the HIV/AIDS epidemic through the methodological structuring of the workings of the National Health System establishments, aimed at achieving a reduction in HIV transmission from HIV-positive mothers to their children in the Dominican Republic”. “Global Partnership” is one of the goals Dominican Republic wants to reach. They would like to address the needs of less develop countries. They would like to deal comprehensively with the debt problems of developing countries. They would like to develop an open, ruled based, predictable, non-discriminating trading and financial system. They are making strides in obtaining this goal. One example of this is when Haiti experienced a horrible earthquake. Dominican Republic was one of the first nations to help in times of crises.
