Combate HIV/AIDS

According to the World Population Data Sheet 0.1 percent of the population living with HIV/AIDS in 2009 between the ages of 15-49 are males, and 1.1 percent are women.  The United Nations are aware of this growing problem and have come up with plans to help combat the battle against HIV/AIDS.  According to the UNICEF website the United Nation are placing an emphasis on the prevention of virus transmission from mother to children. Since early 2000, the National Vertical Transmission of HIV/AIDS Reduction Programme (PNRTV), set up as a pilot project at three maternity hospitals in the country that has been moving towards achieving its purpose. Although it is still a distant goal, it`s getting closer by the day: “Contributing to reduce the social and health impact of the HIV/AIDS epidemic through the methodological structuring of the workings of the National Health System establishments, aimed at achieving a reduction in HIV transmission from HIV-positive mothers to their children in the Dominican Republic”. (UNICEF, 2005)
